Colorado Mountain Club

Colorado Mountain Club is a statewide outdoor membership organization with far more structure than a casual ski group. Trained volunteer leaders run member trips in downhill, Nordic, backcountry skiing, and splitboarding, while eleven regional groups make it possible to learn and travel with people closer to home. Many standard outings are free to members aside from direct expenses.

Its winter schools provide a distinctive progression. A newcomer can start with backcountry Nordic fundamentals or an introduction to touring on alpine, telemark, or splitboard equipment, then move into avalanche education and ski mountaineering. The advanced curriculum covers route planning, equipment, movement, and avalanche assessment for high-mountain tours and ski descents. CMC’s combination of instruction, organized trips, conservation work, and a century-scale institutional history sets it apart from purely social clubs.
