About Western Colorado University Mountain Sports

Western Mountain Sports is broader and more structured than a typical campus outdoor club. Every team has coaches, scheduled practices, and competition travel, allowing students to pursue alpine, Nordic, freeride skiing and snowboarding, or ski mountaineering alongside their academic work. Athletes may register for multiple disciplines, with a multi-sport dues discount.

The Gunnison Valley shapes each program. Freeriders practice at Crested Butte and enter IFSA qualifiers; alpine athletes race through USCSA; Nordic skiers train on established local trails at multiple competition levels; and skimo athletes develop in a sport with deep local terrain access. Western calls it the first collegiate program of its kind, and its model sits between a loose student club and a traditional NCAA varsity department.
