About Durango Winter Sports Club
Durango Winter Sports Club is the organizational home for five distinct programs: Alpine, Freestyle, Freeride/Big Mountain, Snowboard, and Gromlins, its multidisciplinary development team. More than 250 athletes participate in a typical season, supported by roughly 60 coaches and discipline directors. Training centers on Purgatory and the varied San Juan terrain surrounding Durango.
Each branch has its own competitive culture. Alpine athletes train across slalom, giant slalom, and speed development; freeriders spend much of their time in ungroomed steeps, moguls, trees, and cliffs while learning terrain judgment and basic avalanche awareness. Parent work is integral to home races, course building, camps, fundraising, and club operations. The shared aim is personal achievement through sportsmanship, friendship, and sustained team participation—not a one-size-fits-all race program.
