About Mount Sopris Nordic Council
Mount Sopris Nordic Council has operated Spring Gulch since 1986 in partnership with the North Thompson Cattlemen's Association and Crystal River Ranch. The entire 28-plus-kilometer trail system lies on leased private ranchland west of Carbondale, creating a quiet ski-only landscape of sage, oak, juniper, cattle fences, and broad Mount Sopris views. Trails range from beginner loops to longer, rolling tours and are groomed for classic and skate.
Daily use is free, but membership contributions and suggested day donations cover grooming equipment, staff, insurance, and trail maintenance. The private-land agreement shapes the etiquette: dogs, snowshoes, fat bikes, hiking, sledding, and motorized recreation are prohibited, and off-season entry is trespass. Weekly youth and adult programs add community activity without turning Spring Gulch into a commercial Nordic center.
