South Fork Nordic

South Fork Nordic is a self-funded volunteer club built around dependable training rather than a large events calendar. Its primary project is the South Fork Guard Station trail, where crews mow before winter, haul snow onto exposed trouble spots, and groom two or three times a week for skate and classic skiing. The system combines easy out-and-back terrain with more demanding bench loops and excludes walkers, dogs, snowshoes, and bikes from the prepared ski surface.

The club's adaptive grooming strategy is especially distinctive. Volunteers also prepare Home Lake near Monte Vista, Beaver Reservoir, and higher-elevation locations when conditions demand. Lake ice needs little snow and holds it through warm spells, giving marathon and race-focused members a training fallback. The practice traces back to local trail grooming begun in 1988.
